Hand speed exercises (for the pad)
I've put together a sheet of 9 drum pad exercises developed specifically to build hand speed. These are all intended to be practiced with a metronome (as quarter notes).
Start slow, maybe around 50 bpm, and loop each exercise multiple times (8 or more). Pay very close attention to your technique and consistency. You want your right and left hand to sound the same and look the same. Practicing in front of a mirror is a great way to check. Also pay attention to where the accents are and make sure your stick is prepared and raised for those hits. If unaccented, try and keep those strokes low to the pad.
When you are comfortable at 50 bpm, repeat it again at 60, and then incrementally increase the bpm by 10 until you max out. I like to think of this as a game where you continuously try and beat your old score. Once you can get past 100 bpm or so, you'll really start to hear how this can be applied in songs, for fills, hi-hat grooves, complex patterns, and any other quick sequences of hand hits.
Remember, rebound is the most key for speed. Keep your grip loose enough so that each hit freely bounces off the pad. These exercises will activate and strengthen your wrists and fingers which you want to use in conjunction with each other. If you're having trouble or finding you keep hitting a wall, I'd recommend setting up a one-on-one lesson to dive deeper into the fundamentals of the Moeller technique so you can unlock your speed potential.
Have fun!
